About the ArtistRooted in the soil of Nebraska's farmland, Jami Wright reflects her connection to the earth in her pottery, Her love of the beach, where she has lived for several years is a reoccurring theme in her work. Jami, who is always experimenting with new materials, remembers her first experience with clay, "It felt natural," she says. "Clay is malleable and forgiving. You can sketch into it, (like drawing in the sand), and if you aren't quite satisfied, you can smooth it over and begin again. I feel a great sense of pleasure from the process itself...experimenting with new ideas, using new combinations of techniques and materials to make something from whatever I have on hand." "There is an artist with us all," says Jami, "In my classes, I teach more than just pinch, coil, and slab hand building techniques, or how to achieve texture, shape and dimension. Those are just tools. Being a good artist involves learning to 'see'. I encourage my students to explore without inhibition, allowing their creativity to emerge." |
